Settle Inn in Branson Missouri

Has anyone recently stayed at Settle Inn? I have read mixed reviews. Also does anyone know anything about Dockers Inn? I can%26#39;t find any reviews at all about this one.. Thanks.

Settle Inn in Branson Missouri

I stayed there and it was bad, Lately there are more bad reviews than good, ..

But I have heard that they are remodeling, And maybe they can inprove things...

They are a good place, They don%26#39;t offer as much for the price as whisperinghills or branson best, or even savannah house,

All three of them offer 22 item breakfast as well as Ice cream and cobble in the evenings...

But the location is good..........

I would steer clear of the settle inn for now,

If you want a themed room like they have try the Bradford inn,

They are really nice, clean and have a home cooked breakfast with the room, and a beautiful view as well............

Settle Inn in Branson Missouri

I just had a delightful stay at the Settle Inn! I%26#39;m reading some of these posts and I don%26#39;t understand them at all. I travel all over the world for business and I%26#39;m pretty picky... the Settle Inn has just been remodeled TOTALLY... the rooms are cozy and comfortable... they have all new beds throughout the entire place (I only tried one, though!)... their staff couldn%26#39;t have been nicer... and, they were in the process of upgrading their wireless internet when I was there... which I was REALLY glad about because I have to have my laptop and high speed access when I%26#39;m traveling. So... I%26#39;m here to say, if you%26#39;d had a ';not so good experience'; at the Settle Inn, why don%26#39;t you give them another try? Who knows what was going on as it looks like the bad stuff that%26#39;s posted is pretty old! Oh, the other thing I liked about the Settle Inn is that it%26#39;s tucked slightly away and a great ';central location'; in Branson! Like I said, the Settle Inn is my new home away from home when I travel to Branson!

I think the Settle Inn is a nice choice for Branson visitors. It is reasonable prices, in a good location and offers a lot of amenities.

There is a good review of the property here:

should I be worried about saftey?

We are planning to spend 3 days in St Louis next week and have a room at the Union Staion Marriott. In my research for the trip I came across a few scary posts. It will be myself and my sister-n-law (both late 20s) and my daughters 3 and 5. We are planning to visit city museum, the zoo, maybe AB tour, the arch, botanical gardens, possibly the loop, I was planning to take metrolink when possible to avoid driving in a city I%26#39;m unfamiliar with.

Should I be concerend about any of the areas we plan to go. Is downtown area near union station safe? If it was me and my nusband I would not be so worried but since it concerns my kids I am wondering if I need to be worried.

Please help put my mind to rest or let me know if I need to look into changing hotels or activities.

should I be worried about saftey?

I would not worry about any of the places that you mentioned.

Only the Arch and the Loop are easily accessible by Metrolink though. There is a metrolink station at Forest Park (the Zoo) but it is a long walk to the Zoo from the station. Take a cab to the City Museum, the Zoo and to the Botanical Gardens. Part of a major interstate (64/40) is closed for a few miles in St. Louis so it could make driving in an unfamiliar city even more confusing. The AB tour may be boring for the kids but the adults will enjoy it.

You will be fine at the Marriott. Unless there is a Blues game, there wont be too many people downtown at night near Union Station except those shopping, dining, or staying at the hotels. I assume with young children you don%26#39;t plan on walking around the city late into the night. I have visited the Zoo, City Museum, Arch, and Botanical Gardens with my 5 and 3 yr olds plenty of times and never felt threatened or afraid. I can understand your feelings but I think you will be just fine and will love all the places you visit. :)

Now, that being said- there are weirdos in every city. But, the areas you mentioned and the areas you travel through to get to them are fine.

Have a good time. :)

should I be worried about saftey?

Thanks for your response. You are correct we wont be walking around at 11:00 at night and I figured the places we are planning to see are places that would be fairly safe. But I tend to be a bit of a worrier. Thanks for helping put my mind at ease.

You are welcome!

Be sure to seek out the whispering arch in Union Station. You will find it at the hotel entrance off Market St. Stand at one end and face the wall with one of your daughters and have your sister in law walk to the other side of the lobby and stand and face the wall on the other end with your other daughter. You can whisper and hear each other like you were standing next to each other.

Have fun

Best restaurant food in St. Louis, per Zagat

The 2009/2010 Zagat (that’s pronounced za-GAHT, folks) guide to the “World’s Top Restaurants” just crossed my desk, and St. Louis is represented as follows in terms of “best food” rankings. (Remember that Zagat uses a 30-point scale.)

28 points

Sidney Street Cafe

Paul Manno’s

27 points

Tony’s

Trattoria Marcella

Niche

Al’s

Dominic’s

Pomme

26 points

The Crossing

Annie Gunn’s

Atlas

Nippon Tei

The Grill at the Ritz-Carlton

Giovanni’s

LoRusso’s Cucina

Chez Leon

25 points

Harvest

(1111 Mississippi is also in the extended listings with 25 points for food, but didn’t make the ranking list at the top of the first page.)

Some random observations:

1) In New York, Per Se, Daniel and Jean-Georges, among others, got 28 points for food. In Chicago, Alinea and Tallgrass got 29 points. In Paris, Taillevent, Alain Ducasse and several others got 28.

2) Zagat still alphabetizes “St. Louis” behind San Francisco and Seattle. Nails on chalkboard for me.

3) While I don’t agree with the exact order, I think the statistical validity of large sample sizes is borne out in the list as a whole. Some contenders that I wonder about include Cardwell’s at the Plaza, An American Place and Monarch, although the final two might have been caught up in the chef shifting that’s gone one at both in the past several months.

Anyway, restaurant rankings always generate lots of passionate exchanges, so let us know what you think.

Best restaurant food in St. Louis, per Zagat

I just read this article today. I%26#39;m glad that my fav Sidney Street still ranks high. Have to admit that I was suprised that 1111 Mississippi raked up 25 points. My last two visits there were pretty dismal.

  • Castlerock, Welk Resort Or Grand Country Inn

We are booking our first Branson vaction with two children 7 %26amp; 2. We are looking at hotels with waterparks, does anyone have any recent reviews of the three listed above. I have read pretty many negative views on Welk but not too many on either Grand Country or Castlrock. Any help is appreciated. Also does anyone know if it is cheaper to book tickets and hotel all at once or get tickets somewhere else. I am hoping to spend less than $1000 for family of 4 , Dixie Stampede, Branson Bell, Chinese Acrobats, SDC, possibly the Ripleys Believe it or Not.

Castlerock, Welk Resort Or Grand Country Inn

    Castlerock is still not open. They were originally scheduled to open last fall, but their status right now is ';Hiring.';

You can also check the 1branson.com forum for info on the other 2 places.

If it were me, however, I would consider paying a lot less to stay at a hotel or condo. The benefit of a condo for your family would be that you can do some of your meals ';in'; instead of going out. And many condos have a pool in the complex. There are some nice ones by owner (like Sandy%26#39;s http://www.homeawayconnect.com/calendar.aspx?propertyid=133271%26amp;cid=5) that you can find on www.vrbo.com, www.homeaway.com, www.vacationrentals.com, and www.vacationhomerentals.com, or try Hunter%26#39;s Friend Resort (http://www.huntersfriendresort.com/).

Then visit White Water and get the Park Hopper pass with SDC. Or, get the SDC season pass and get discounts to White Water ($5 off per ticket).

OR...get the Super Park Pass and visit both parks anytime during your visit ($118 per adult and $98 per kid).

The season passes also come with a discount for the Branson Belle (50% off noon and 8 pm cruises), $5 off Dixie Stampede tickets, and other ones as well (like $5 off Ride the Ducks, which your family would really enjoy - I know we do!)

But if you prefer a toned down version of White Water - a few slides and a big pool - instead, try the AquaPlex for only $4/person.

As far as buying a package with lodging and tickets - don%26#39;t worry about going that route. Many of the seasoned Branson lovers recommend purchasing your tickets directly from the theatre. You can find a Ripley%26#39;s Believe it or Not coupon (and many others like mini-golf, etc.) here: www.sunnydayguide.com/branson/br_coupons.php. Even though it says it expires 3/31/09, it will be refreshed to a new expiration date later, so bookmark the page and print your coupons before you leave.

    Have a great time!

Castlerock, Welk Resort Or Grand Country Inn

    Wow, Girlfriend....You covered it all.......

Not much else to add, except,,,

Stay away from the discount booths around town,

They are a high pressure time share sales..

Just tell them you are locals, they will leave you alone,,,

A good place to take the kids is the museum at the college of the ozarks,,,

    Ralph foster museum,

It is free for them and $4.00 for adults,

    www.rfostermuseum.com/

And one of the best restaurants around branson is at the college as well,,,

    http://www.keetercenter.edu/dining.asp

And a fun place to eat with free singing , IS Mels hard luck diner,

It is a 50%26#39;s themed diner where the wait staff sings while they serve,

there has been two of the singers who made it to American idol,

It is located in the grand village shopping center, next door to the grand palace theater on the main strip(76)

And don%26#39;t forget to check out the branson landing,

Great food and shopping, and a fountain show with fire and water,,,

    www.bransonlanding.com/

Sometimes I think I should change my name to Mrs. Frugal. ;)

Oh, and if you want to hit the go-karts, go to http://www.bransontracks.com/cart/gocard.asp and get a Go Card and get your credits at 50% off.

And I have read that Moonshine Beach should be open by the time you get there in June. Our boys love it - just be aware that it is a beach of small pebbles and not sand (at least that was 2 years ago before it flooded - I don%26#39;t know how they are repairing it).

And I did notice that the Sunny Day Guide had a coupon for the Acrobats, too.

I think they pretty well covered it, but to answer your original question..If you still want to do the indoor waterpark thing. I would go with Grand Country for the age of your children

It has been about 3 years since we did so, but we have taken our grandsons to Branson and stayed at Grand Country Inn 3 or 4 times. Not a fancy hotel, but we were always pleased with the accomodations. Always clean. We purchased packages through Grand Country. They have a buffet, an ice cream parlor and a pizza restaurant on the property...foood is decent. The boys enjoyed the arcade on the property, they gave us discounts on the theater shows there on the property and I believe they offered Silver Dollar City tickets in the package. If you purchase season passes to Silver Dollar City, I believe you can get discounts to Dixie Stampede, Branson Bell and your room rate at Grand Country.

I’ve heard both positive and negative reviews for Welk. It does not have a water park. It has pools. You should be able to get a full condo with a living/dining room, kitchen and bedrooms.

Grand Country has an indoor water park but it is small. I’ve heard many complaints about the rooms not as nice as other hotels and older kids feel the water park is too lame for their tastes. Your kids will probably be content with it.

As posted, Castle Rock has not opened yet. This will offer an indoor water park.

If you want more than the resort pools and want a water park but don’t want to pay the price for White Water, I would suggest you check out Branson’s Rec Plex. This is city owned so it is priced at a steal. The price a family can attend is about the same as one White Water admission. Water sprays and water slides too.

If you are not familiar with vrbo, vacationrentals, vacationhomerentals, as listed by Canyon Retreat, they are listing portals where private owners, managers and resorts list their vacation condos, homes %26amp; cabins for rent. Thank you for posting about my condo but the link is wrong. I think you were trying to link to my vrbo listing. Instead you listed my availability calendar. My vrbo listing is www.vrbo.com/133271 or directly at www.meadowbrook-resort.com.

Silver Dollar City (SDC) theme park is not your normal nothing but rides theme park. . The admission price seems high but this park can fill up a lot of your vacation. We take our grandkids about 4-5 times a year, 2-4 days each time. You’ll have to get on their site to decide if season passes would be your best bet with the additional benefits they offer. If not, I would suggest either buying vouchers 2 days for the price of 1 from www.reservebranson.com and/or take advantage of SDC’s offer of going in after 3 pm and getting in free the next day. After the park closes, they have a 1 ½ hour show. It is outdoors and you can spread out so if the 2 yo wants to dance or sleep they can. (Our grand kids always danced in front of their seats and stay awake for the whole show. Of course they fall asleep immediately when they hit the stroller.) Water fun is also available for the kids there so looking for an inclusive water park in your lodging price may not be needed between your lodging’s pools and SDC. Most place offer pools. Some also have toddler pools. You can always add the Rec Plex and White Water into your schedule.

I would spend your money on Ride the Ducks instead of Ripley’s Believe It or Not. If you want a museum your kids may enjoy, take them to Ralph Foster’s Museum located at the College of the Ozarks as listed above by Fordarama. Check out the college website. This is a free tuition and working college. Go when you can see a live milking demonstration, the mill is running, view the antique tractor and green house buildings, and tour the campus. Last year the adult ticket price for Ralph Foster was $4.50/adult, under 17 free. Take your camera for some fun photos of your kid’s reactions to the taxidermies wildlife displays. After standing 5 minutes staring at the full sized adult moose with her arms crossed, my 2 yo granddaughter last year finally announced “I no like moose” before walking away. You can spend most of the day at the college and most is free. Keeter Center is a little pricey. I would suggest you dine there at lunch time to save on costs.

Don’t waste your time buying a package or something tied to only their choices. There are coupons everywhere but follow the advice and not go to the ticket booths. Most are time share and vacation club traps. If you want 2 tickets for the price of one, go to www.branson2for1tickets.com to see what shows they offer. You buy your tickets once you get into town. They carry only some of the shows. Other places have this same name but they are not Branson 2 for 1 Tickets. They are timeshare traps. The only place these are available is immediately west off of Hwy 65 on the corner of Hwy 76 and Roark. It is on Hwy 76, on the southwest corner of the intersection. This intersection has a traffic light so it is easy to find.

I don’t know how long you are staying but a lot is available at very affordable prices. SDC allows you to take in food so you can take in your kid’s snacks too for more savings. Eat out lunches when the prices are a little cheaper. Carry in pizza, food from the grocery deli’s or make your own meals if you have a kitchen and eat your evening meals as a picnic or where you are staying. You can really have fun yet stretch your dollars in Branson.

I just found out Welk Resort will have a water park. Not open yet. The only search I found said it is scheduled to open 3/20/09, subject to change. This opening date was not on the resort%26#39;s site, so I have no idea on accuracy.

Castlerock opened last weekend (March 7, 2009). I stayed there with my husband, 5 y/o daughter and 8 y/o son for two nights. They enjoyed it very much. We had the hotel to ourselves one night! Had the waterpark to ourselves as well. It%26#39;s not highly advertised yet.

I would stay here again. We liked the room with a bunkbed in a cave-ish area. It had its own TV so the kids could watch cartoons.

I would not plan to spend a whole day at the waterpark. Not enough to be entertained that long. 2 big slides, lazy river, pool and area for little ones to play.

There%26#39;s a pirate putt-putt not far away - could probably walk to it.

If you stay there soon, realize it%26#39;s newly open and there are going to be glitches. But the staff was nice and made up for any goofs. The lifeguards are the NICEST you will ever meet.

Funny enough, we also spent a night at Grand Country. It has two slides and a larger waterplay area. It has a lazy river, area for little ones to play, a pool, and 2 hot tubs (where I spent most of my time). The lifeguards here were not vigilant like at Castlerock. However, there was more water activity for the kids at this place. Still not sure a whole day here, either. This place is older. It was very clean but very dated. Of course we just came from a room no one had probably ever slept in.

We very much enjoyed the Dixie Stampede. We sat second row up on the North side. We paid $5 extra to sit lower, and I would spend the extra again. My daughter received a flower from one of the contestants (horse rider in the North vs the South tournament part of the show) and my son got to do a lasso thing. Not important to sit in the ';bottom of the U'; of the stadium, as the show was designed for all to see and participate in.

We did Branson Belle a couple of years ago. The dog show guy was hilarious. But the food and staff were terrible. I won%26#39;t do it a second time.

My children saw the animal show at Grand Country last summer and really enjoyed it. You mentioned packages - they offer some kind of package if you stay multiple nights.

Don%26#39;t do Ripleys. It%26#39;s a lot of reading and not a lot of exhibits. We thought my 8 y/o son would enjoy it... but he didn%26#39;t. The 5 y/o can%26#39;t read, and spent the whole time tugging me into the next room.

Hope this helps. Mostly stream of consiousness here... just got back and hadn%26#39;t put my thoughts together formally - but will leave a review for Castlerock later.

    To clear up any confusion...The Welk Resort Waterpark is open. They feature a splash-a-torium detailed as a ';10,000+ square foot water park open year round, and features an outrageous, 100 foot, indoor water slide, indoor/outdoor pool, locker rooms, and a large indoor/outdoor hot tub. Plus, a totally awesome indoor/outdoor ';Splash-Zone'; where staying dry is impossible. Free to our owners and guests, we invite you to join us in Branson this year for some wet and wild fun!!';

    CastleRock, previously known as The Atrium Inn, has just recently opened their waterpark. Their water park is described as ';a climate controlled, 84 degree indoor water park. Finally, a truly weather-proof vacation destination the whole family will love. Everyone will find something to love with 3 water slides 1,000 gallon tipping bucket, splash pool, state of the art arcade and more!';

Grand Country is the oldest waterpark in town, but it is also consistently a favorite with guests.

    Hope that helps.

Just thought that I would let you know...we stayed at Castle Rock and it was the most horrible experience. Been to branson hundreds of times and this is by far the worst stay we have ever had. Wire was poking out of bunk bed(they were not sturdy) and when asked for another room, they were not nice. I told them that the children were not sleeping where wire was poking out...it could have easily strangled one of them. It was in loop like a hangman%26#39;s noose. we have never had any trouble in Branson, but be warned DO NOT STAY here. Too much money and not friendly. We have stayed at Grand Country Inn about 2 years ago and it was fine.

The Best Snacks at the Ball Park?

I finally picked up a couple of tickets for a Cards game. Opening day is during the women%26#39;s Final Four tournament which I will be attending. I opted for Infield Terrace, Section 347, Row 6. Decent seats with binoculars it looks like. :-)

So, now for the all important question, ';What%26#39;s my best option for game day snacks?'; The choices seem pretty generic. I%26#39;ve never had a Bratwurst. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    --vaca99

The Best Snacks at the Ball Park?

I usually get a brat and smother it with kraut and onions. Need to have a cold Bud to compliment it. I dig the garlic fries. Other than that- I like the old standby- Roasted Peanuts.

Section 347 will be great and a lot closer than you think. You will also have a great view of downtown and the Arch.

    Have a great time.

The Best Snacks at the Ball Park?

Check out seatdata.com for a view from that section.

As for food I have to agree the specialty fries are great! I had some good BBQ from out behind the right field bleachers. Also love the nacho supreme w/ the multicolor chips, but I%26#39;m not sure if they still have those. And, as the other poster pointed out, you have to have a frosty Bud.

I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve ever met anyone who has never had a bratwurst. I would definitely grab one, with kraut as previously stated. Or, you could opt for a bratzel, but if you really want to do it justice, skip it at the ballpark and get it from Gus%26#39;, which is across I-55 from the Brewery. I second the nachos.

I think there are still a few street vendors that sell roasted peanuts outside the stadium for less than what you%26#39;d pay inside. That makes them taste even better.

I like the Kosher dogs. They are not served at the regular concession stands, but at the Kosher Best carts all over the stadium. Gotta have them with grilled onions. Yum!!! Also love the garlic fries and nacho supreme. I would also recommend buying a Gus%26#39; pretzel sold outside the stadium by independant vendors. Those are a St. Louis tradition.

Keep in mind that you can bring your own food into Busch Stadium. The Cardinals are one of the few teams that allow this anymore.

I agree on the Kosher dogs! Also agree on the Nacho Supreme and buying peanuts before entering the stadium. For me, though, no trip to the ball game is complete without a lemon squishy. It is like a lemon slushy thing....awesome!

Nachos and/or Kosher dog (with kraut and onions). Mmmm can%26#39;t wait for baseball season.

Girls Weekend in St. Louis-Nightlife Info Needed!

We are coming to St. Louis for a girls weekend and want to do some dancing. We are all in our 40s so we love disco, 70%26#39;s and 80%26#39;s music. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Girls Weekend in St. Louis-Nightlife Info Needed!

Do you know what weekend? There are a few good 70%26#39;s and 80%26#39;s cover bands in the area that put on a good show. I%26#39;ve seen a few at the Voodoo Lounge at Harrahs and at the Bottleneck Blues Bar at Ameristar and each time the crowd was really into the music and dancing.

Girls Weekend in St. Louis-Nightlife Info Needed!

You may want to look at http://www.examiner.com/st_louis for details about what you can do in St Louis in the nightlife, restaurant and winery/other catagories. When I lived in St Louis we had The Landing but now alot of the bar/dance music has moved into south county. There is a place called House of Rock you may want to check out as well as places a band called Joe Dirt is playing. They are a local band but play alot of 70%26#39;s and 80%26#39;s music.

I hope that this helps you. Have fun !!

    bay66

Along with Joe Dirt...Metal Studz, and That 80%26#39;s Band are other popular rock bands in the area. I know all of these play around the St. Charles area.

I will tell you where NOT to go. The Landing - it is very young. Metromix is a pretty good source of info on bars.

Restaurant in downtown area for group

We will be in Kansas City and need a restaurant downtown for a large group of teens and families that will take reservations for a Friday night. Any suggestions?

Restaurant in downtown area for group

    From today%26#39;s paper

Downtown’s AMC Mainstreet Theatre won’t open until May, but Kansas Citians can get a taste of what’s to come at The Marquee.

The theater’s bar and grill will open for dinner at 4 p.m. today at the southwest corner of 14th and Main streets in the Kansas City Power %26amp; Light District.

The 4,500-square-foot space features a lounge area with leather chairs, a communal table, a four-sided bar (one of the largest in the district and featuring several two-story towers of mirrors), an open dessert kitchen, and a dining area with 40-foot ceilings and custom chandelier sculptures. And it all fits in the lobby of the original 1920s-era theater.

The restaurant space heralds its historic past by showcasing the theater’s original support beams in wood moldings and original terrazzo tile floor. A mezzanine overlooking the restaurant will be available for private events, as will the “Director’s Room” below the entrance.

“Being able to restore a long-neglected, historic theater and then having a great, unique restaurant is yet another experience for Kansas City,” said Jon Stephens, president of the district.

Menu items include omelets, Reubens, hamburgers and hot dogs, open-face turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy, spaghetti and meatballs, meat loaf, cornbread, crepes suzette, cookies, specialty cocktails and martinis. A late-night menu for 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. will offer such items as blueberry pancakes, crepes, biscuits and gravy, chicken tenders and quesadillas.

Prices will range from $7.75 for a Chicago hot dog to $14 for chicken fried steak and sides.

The Marquee will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday. It will be closed Sundays for now.

“It’s open to the public starting today and will be a chance for the public to get a sneak peek,” Stephens said.

    Baseball Trip

Hi all, We will be taking a baseball trip to Kansas City this summer, going to a Royals game. We prefer to stay in the downtown area where we can walk to restaurants, attractions, bars and entertainment. We would have a rental car to get to the game. What hotels would you suggest would best for this? We are looking at a mid-range budget, nothing super expensive. Thanks.

    Baseball Trip

KC has 3 distinct areas in its urban core: Downtown, Crown Center and The Plaza.

Downtown would be near the new Power and Light District, and the Sprint Center.

Crown Center is near Union Station, Liberty Memorial, the Crossroads Art District, and Crown Center itself.

The Plaza is uniquely a place in and of itself, with restaurants, a few bars and shopping.

Any of these areas would be a great inner-city location to stay during a visit to the City. I will leave the post open to others to chime in on low cost hotels.

    Baseball Trip

    And here%26#39;s a fun website for you;

    www.visitkc.com/index.aspx

KC has way more than ';3 distinct cores'; in it%26#39;s urban area - there%26#39;s Westport, the Crossroads District, Quality Hill, Hospital Hill, Historic 18th %26amp; Vine District, and Historic Northeast, just to name a few.

Westport may also be an area you would be interested in - located a few blocks North of the Plaza with lots of restaurants, bars, entertainment. Also, there is a grocery store (Sunfresh) if you want to save a few bucks on snacks and drinks. I would check Holiday Inn Express - Westport, Quarterage Hotel %26amp; Embassy Suites to determine if they meet your budget requirements.

I recommend staying at the Downtown Marriott if you want to be near great restaurants and places to go out. The Power %26amp; Light District, which is filled with bars and restaurants, is just a couple blocks away and is the newest hot spot area of the city and is always buzzing with activity on the weekends.

I%26#39;d vote to stay in Power and light district or Plaza

Thank you for your responses we have decided to stay in the Power and Light District, still deciding on a hotel. Anyway, if we were to not rent a car, what public transportation would be available to get to the Royals game? Also, what about public transportation from MCI to downtown? How much would a cab be? Is there a train? Thanks so much.

We do not have any trains. From Airport to hotel check out KCI Shuttle- once you decide on hotel- see if they offer any transportation options

  • weekend trip ideas

Hi all. This has probably been asked several times, I didn%26#39;t get too far in the forum topics-but I am seeing a lot from several months back.

I am thinking of a weekend trip to Kansas City and surrounding area. What are the must do/see places? I am looking at 2-3 nights, planning on staying one night at Harrah%26#39;s. I like museums, shows, casinos, shopping and anything interesting. I have very random interests. Unfortunately, I am not going to be there for baseball games.

This is a VERY last minute trip--just want to go somewhere I haven%26#39;t been yet. I hear Branson isn%26#39;t too far away? Ads on t.v. all the time. Also, what%26#39;s the weather in March/April like there?

Lastly, hotels...all over I%26#39;m sure but any within walking distance to something suggested as a to do, or easy to drive to? Im pretty boring with hotels, dont need fancy, standard Hampton Inn or something similar.

Thanks to anyone still reading - suggestions appreciated!!

    weekend trip ideas

Branson is 3 plus hours away- drive time would eat up alot of your time.

Look into hotels on the country club plaza- can walk to shops, dining and museums

weather should be nice but who knows in KC-can change quickly

    weekend trip ideas

Yeah, katieinkc, have you checked out the forecast for this weekend? Talk about changing weather! Up to 6 inches of snow possible. Oh boy, and we have a birthday trip for my son planned. Good thing that I learned how to drive in snow while living in Nebraska!!!!LOL!!

How far is the airport (MCI) from Crown Center (this sounds like a good place to spemnd time), Union Station and Harrahs?

Im also seeing a lot about 18th and Vone...any input?

Crown Center is about 20- minutes from airport%26gt; KCI shuttle will take you to hotel

thought I replied but it%26#39;s lost...

are the inexpensive hotels by crown center? (under $100) i was thinking of renting a car--is it necessary and hows the traffic?

    thanks katie for input

    Good Restaurants Downtown

We will be in St. Louis for the Women%26#39;s Final Four in April. We have booked the Westin. Any recommendations for good, non-chain restaurants in walking distance. We won%26#39;t have a car, but like to walk.

We are leaving the husbands and kids at home so we need a safe environment for early evening. Of course, there are always taxis if we need them.

Not looking for elegant, just really good local restaurants!

    Thanks,

The Metrolink station is very close to the Westin. Hop on it and take it to 3 stops east to Lacledes Landing. There are some good restaurants and pubs located there.

I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;m missing other great places, but I bet some other posters can fill in some of their favorites.

    Good Restaurants Downtown

    Any other suggestions???

    vaca99

Try toasted ravioli at Charlie Gitto%26#39;s at 6th %26amp; Pine. Lucas Park Grille and the Dubliner, both on Washington Ave, are a longer walk or short cab ride. J Bucks is just west of the Westin. Sen Thai at 12th %26amp; Locust is good too.

J Buck%26#39;s is the fan gathering site for the Trenton region which is the UCONN draw section so I%26#39;ve booked there.

The Dubliner menu looks intriguing! I think that might be another option. We won%26#39;t be packing dress clothes so casual is the rule.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

    --vaca99

I%26#39;ve got to agree with Charlie Gitto%26#39;s. We love their lasagna and the toasted ravioli. I also had Shannon%26#39;s last summer and the steak was GREAT.

Ditto to Charlie Gittos. Excellent portions, good prices, very good food, old fashioned STL ambiance.

At 6th %26amp; Pine, usually closed Sundays unless the Cards are in town.

Calecos Bar %26amp; Restaurant. It%26#39;s right by the baseball studium.

Tin Can Tavern on Locust (www.tincantavern.com)

I would heartily disagree w/ the Caleco%26#39;s recommendation.

From the Westin, if you walk east to the other side of the baseball park, then turn right (south) for just about 2 blocks past the stadium, you will find a group of great local clubs/restaurants anchored by:

    and

And UCONN (Men) are going down tomorrow.

Advance reservations for Arch on a weekday

Do I need advance reservations for the Arch on a weekday (specifically April 21)? If so, can I call or must they be on line? If not, how long is the wait midday?

Advance reservations for Arch on a weekday

I wouldn’t worry about crowds except the possibility of a school group touring since it’s not yet summer vacation. If you’re concerned about that, you can contact them a few days before your visit to see if any large groups have made reservations.

    Call toll-free: 877-982-1410

    E-mail: info@gatewayarch.com

You may purchase tickets in advance here: ticketsforthearch.com/ecom/eacts/home.do…

Advance reservations for Arch on a weekday

    Great. Thank you.

Just a bit of follow up --

I did indeed visit the Arch in St. Louis. There was a line mid-day but it was not long and moved quickly. By the time we bought tickets and got to the line, it was almost our turn. Advance purchase is possible through their website but doesn%26#39;t seem necessary (perhaps you%26#39;d need it on a summer weekend) - you%26#39;ll wait essentially the same amount of time at the elevator anyway. It%26#39;s a small space on top without much to do - so people don%26#39;t spend much time -- still it%26#39;s kind of an interesting experience if you like that sort of thing (my kids and I do).

I don%26#39;t think advanced reservations will be necessary for that date. We went this past Monday afternoon at approx. 130pm. There was absolutely no wait whatsoever. We walked right on.

My wife %26amp; I love performing arts theatres. We will be staying in Chesterfield in June of 2009, and would like to know what theatres you would recommend in the local area. Thank you.

Where to eat dinner with 5 and 3 year-olds

    Hey Forum members

My DH and I are going to Branson with our 5 yo son and 3 yo daughter this weekend, to see SDC and the Ducks. We are staying at the Hilton Convention Center. What are some good restaurants 9family-friendly yet with tasty food) that we can hit, preferably within walking distance from our hotel? I envision going out during the day, refreshing up in our hotel room late afternoon and then heading out for dinner, hence the request for something near our hotel.

    TIA

Where to eat dinner with 5 and 3 year-olds

    Most popular:

    Cantina Laredo Mexican (Landing)

    Shorty Smalls (Landing)

    White River Fish Co (Landing)

    Famous Dave’s BBQ (Landing)

Farm House Restaurant (Historical Downtown—a little bit of a walk or ride the trolley for free if running during the hours you are going.)

Not sure what you mean by family friendly. Did you mean does not serve alcohol? If so, I need to revise this list. Farm House is the most child friendly of the list above. More like eating at grandma’s house. Not sure how late you plan on eating. They won’t be open as late as the other places listed.

Mr G%26#39;s Chicago Pizza is also in the historical downtown area but I would only suggest it for take out. The bar area is often very, very smokey. If you are non smokers you will not be happy walking through as the dining area is small and not seperate. They offer take out though. If your kids are too tired to go out, this may be a good option.

BTW, our grand kids are the same age. They adore Silver Dollar City (SDC) and can’t wait until next month when we go. We’ve got 2 days planned to spend at SDC in April and another trip planned for 2 -3 days in May. If it was possible to live there, they would. :) You’ll have fun.

Where to eat dinner with 5 and 3 year-olds

Cantina is a bit to pricey and fancy for kids,,,,,

White river is great and right across the way from bass pro shop.

It is decorated woodsy and is very good,

Texas cattle steak house is good , and always something yummy for the kids there,, and Joes crab shack is also good.

and there is a macaroni grill in the landing too.

A good , fun place to try isn%26#39;t within walking distance, But is super fun, Is mels hard luck diner,

It features a singing wait staff, fun diner fare, and a great soda fountain, the kids will love it,,

It is located in the grand village shopping center , next door to the grand palace theater,,,,

It is a must do and see..

Cantina Laredo is a bit pricey for family fare, but if you like mexican food it is the best around. they do the gourmet type mexican. There are hundreds of places for families to eat without costing too much though. All of the national chains are there. But usually the best stuff is the local retaurants. The Branson cafe downtown is good for plate lunch and pies. CH

Also %26lt; not within walking distance,

    But very good..

Is Chesters, they are located in the Hill billy Inn.

The view is awesome, and the burgers and ruebens are wonderful..

Hand made, burgers, salad dressings, hand breaded fish and chips..

Not to far down on 76 on the left , going away from the landing area....Watch for the signs,,

they have extra parking in the back....

Thanks all-knew I could count on you! I%26#39;ll be looking up some of these suggestions when we get there this Friday.

';lovemycondo';, by family-friendly I did not meant to imply alcohol-free--I meant to say restaurants where kids were certainly welcome, yet not specifically catered to with junked down versions of good food. Hence many of your suggestions fit the bill quite nicely!

    Cheers

The dining places are all family friendly in Branson, But some of the places like “Ernie Biggs” at night after people have a few drinks, it becomes the typical bar setting. I’m guessing by the ages of your kids, you’ll be able to eat about everywhere and be back into your hotel before you have to worry about this.

If you do decide to eat out other than at the Landing, we really enjoy Mel’s Hard Luck Diner as listed above as adults. We’ve taken our grands there twice. (Same age as your kids). They had no interest in the singing wait staff, Of course they were totally into the malts and fries. So I would suggest go there for you %26amp; your dh. If you want something fun for them, go to the McFarlain’s in the IMAX. Ask for a “special table”. Our grands enjoyed this as it slowly rises while you dine. If you go to McFarlain’s, pick up a free Sunny Day or Best Read guide. These free magazines are found everywhere. You should be able to get a McFarlain’s coupon in one of the them.

Pizza World Buffet. Lunch and dinner Price is reasonable - 6.99 for adults and 4.99 I think for kids. Drinks are extras and water is free.

We just took a group there last night of 17.

    Hiking and waterfalls

    Hey everyone!

I am going to be in Branson from May 30 - June 6 and was wondering if anyone can tell me where some great hiking trails with waterfalls are. I am hoping to see some larger ones (higher than 20%26#39;) but am not sure if there are any around.

Thanks so much for your help!

    Hiking and waterfalls

If they happen to have the dam open (most likely not, though), you could hike along the trail by the dam and see the water fall down several hundred feet. ;)

We didn%26#39;t see any waterfalls on the trails off of Fall Creek Rd. Maybe in Dogwood Canyon they would have some - I don%26#39;t know.

    Have a great time!

    Hiking and waterfalls

There are a lot of great hiking trails but I can%26#39;t think of one with a 20%26#39; and higer waterfall. The only place that may is Dogwood as mentioned above. They have waterfalls but I%26#39;m not sure of how high they are. Contact them direct. The website is http://www.dogwoodcanyon.com/. They have a lot of outdoor activities available besides hiking.

I read that you have to pay to get into Dogwood Canyon to walk or hike-is it worth it? What other places are there for hiking? We are coming the last week in April and are looking forward to seeing the scenery and finds places for nice hikes.

    Thanks for your help.

Well, you%26#39;re only going to be a little drive from the tallest waterfall between the Appalachians and Rockies. At about 200 ft. Hemmed in Hollow Waterfall near Ponca, AR is the place you want to go. You can get there by floating in a canoe on the beautiful Buffalo River then hiking 3/4 mi. up a trail. Or you can hike it from a trailhead for a much longer hike. I recommend the float---a true Ozarks experience and not difficult for a beginner. Here%26#39;s a link, you can google it and see several videos. It is a true freefall waterfall very unique. It would be a great way to spend one of your days---the area around Jasper has LOTS to see.

women's final four- need advice for dining and shopping

My mom and I are headed to the Final Four next weekend. We are staying at the Drury Inn near Union Station. Can anyone recommend non-touristy shopping in the downtown area? We will not have a car but can walk or ride the metrolink. What about dining? I am familiar with restaurants at Union Station and Laclede%26#39;s Landing, but what about other restaurants that we can%26#39;t find at home in Texas? We don%26#39;t have a food preference but would like to try something casual and unique to St. Louis.

Any tips on how to spend our free time between games? How are the riverboat cruises?

    Thanks for the help!

women's final four- need advice for dining and shopping

The Good Pie on Olive St between Union Station and midtown StL is a cozy place that serves thin Neopolitan-style pizza from a wood oven. More dining suggestions are found in replies to this post...

There are several stores like UMA, Salt of the Earth, and Macrosun centered along either Washington Ave or Locust St that have unique gifts and home accessories. This is a big loft district, so these stores carry some eclectic and unique stuff. There are also clothing boutiques in the same location.

  • Food Finds of KC?

I will be making two long weekend trips to KC - late April and early August, probably staying in the Crown Center area, and will have a rental car.

Besides barbecue, are there any other food finds - that I should try? New Orleans has king cakes, mufalettas, Zapp%26#39;s chips, etc. What are Kansas City%26#39;s special food treats?

    Food Finds of KC?

head to city market on Saturday am. hit Cascones for breakfast- the best- take a stroll thru the market area- not far from your hotel

    Food Finds of KC?

Here are a few of my local favorites. Googling them will give you the info you need to decide whether or not they meet your criteria:

Stroud%26#39;s Restaurant on Shawnee Mission Parkway.......family style home-cookin%26#39;. Pan-fried chicken. Artery-choking gravy, garlic marinated pork chops, sticky rolls, etc.

McGonigle%26#39;s Meat Market...multi-generational family butcher shop and market on south Ward Parkway. Excellent cuts of beef.

Christopher Elbow Chocolates...1819 Mcgee St. Downtown. Artisan chocolates. Just a couple blocks north of Crown Center area.

Strawberry Hill Povitica Bread. May have to contact them to locate the closest retail outlet when you%26#39;re here. http://www.povitica.com/

    Waldo Pizza...74th %26amp; Broadway

Besides BBQ - steaks. :) Check out Pierpont%26#39;s @ Union Station. A skywalk connects Crown Center with Union Station, the Westin and Hyatt Regency.

    herefordhouse.com/content/…all_menus.php

You%26#39;ll be relatively close to the ';Power and Light District'; - lots of bars %26amp; restaurants in a relatively safe area - don%26#39;t stray away from the P%26amp;L District, though. Downtown can be a bit sketchy at night.

Lots of places around town have live Jazz on the weekends - The Phoenix is one of my fav spots - a bit further downtown than the P%26amp;L District. Pick up a local mag ';The Pitch'; it will have all the happenings all over town as well as restaurant reviews.

Power and Light has a lot of places, but with only a couple of exceptions, they are the same chains you would find at home. If you do go there, Peach Tree Restaurant is an exception.

The recomendation of Strouds is very good.

To my taste, the Povitica at Old Country Bakery in Lenexa is much better than Strawberry Hill (which is also in Lenexa).

Garozzo%26#39;s Ristorante at the orignal location at 526 Harrison St is a special local treat. http://www.garozzos.com/

Or the Savoy Grill at 219 W 9th St. Good food and a great history - 106 years old and a favorite restaurant of Harry Truman. You can%26#39;t eat the history, but it is worth reading some of it here: http://www.savoygrill.net/history.html

Thanks for all of the recommendations! I have plenty of choices during my two stays in the KC. The Povitica bread looks delicious.

They sell the bread at City Marker on saturdays in the summer

IMO, strawberry hill povatica is overpriced. I like the povatica and of course sausage from Krizman%26#39;s House of Sausage. The povatica there is only like $6, and they have the best sausage in the city.

A Few Nights and a Ballgame...

We%26#39;re going to be visiting St. Louis in Mid-June for a few nights and a Cards game at Busch Stadium. We will be there Wed-Saturday and am trying to figure out where we want to stay.

    Here%26#39;s what we like:

    1) Nightlife

    2) Good Eats

    3) Maybe a show (?)

    4) Walk-ability

    5) One fine-dining (or at least upscale dining) night

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Is the area around the park walkable? Is it better to stay a couple miles away where there may be nicer (safer) places within walking distance and just take a cab to the game?

Any and all thoughts/ideas are appreciated.

A Few Nights and a Ballgame...

There are several hotels near Union Station, some nice upscale restaurants (Dierdorf %26amp; Harts, not far from Busch Stadium). If you stay at someplace like the Hampton at Union Station, you%26#39;re not far from the riverfront and the arch. There%26#39;s also a shuttle to the stadium that%26#39;s very inexpensive ($4 round-trip/person) -- then you don%26#39;t have to pay for parking. It%26#39;s pretty easy to get around in that part of town. Hotels usually have prewritten directions to places like museums, Forest Park (zoo, St. Louis Museum, MO History Museum). Take in a show at the Fox Theartre.

A Few Nights and a Ballgame...

There are some hotels withing walking distance to the stadium along with a few restaurants and bars. There is a light rail system (Metrolink) that has a stop across from the stadium that you can take to Lacledes Landing for nightlife, some more dining and a new upscale casino/hotel and dining (Lumiere Place). The light rail also has a stop at Union Station which the previous poster mentioned.

    http://www.lumiereplace.com/home.aspx

    http://www.lacledeslanding.com/

    Have a good time

I would suggest 2 areas of St. Louis: Soulard and the Central West End. You are not walkable from the stadium area but there are a lot of options for nightlife and eating once you get there.

There are also a number of nice restaurants and nightlife on Washington St downtown.

It would be helpful if you could provide a little more guidance about the class of hotel you are looking for and types of food that interest you.

IMO, downtown STL is very walkable, and the only dangers after a game are the ';over-served';. The streets will be full of people before and after the games.

Thanks for everyone%26#39;s responses thus far. To answer your questions to me:

    1) We%26#39;re looking for rooms that can be had for less than $120/night. we%26#39;d also really like to be able to walk out of our hotel and, within blocks, be at fun dining/cultural/nightlife spots.

    2) As to dining, we%26#39;d like to have a nice dinner one night we are there --- something different and ecclectic. Basically, 5-star dining at a steakhouse or nice Italian restaurant... nothing snooty, though...

    Zoo

My wife %26amp; I will be in St.Louis in June, for a couple of days. We were thinking of visiting the zoo.Is it a very large zoo, with a lot of walking. We are both in our 60%26#39;s. Is the zoo on level ground ,or hilly? Any help would be appreciated.

    Zoo

The zoo is pretty big and there is a lot to see. One part of the zoo is on a hill (The Historic Hill). They do have the Zooline Railroad with 4 or 5 stops. Buy a round trip ticket for each of you and get off at each station and explore, then hop on and go to the next station. It will reduce a lot of walking, but you will still do a decent amount at the exhibits and between them. Don%26#39;t let it scare you though- our Zoo is beautiful and the admission is free.

    Zoo

Yes, this is an awesome zoo! You have to see it. It is free except the parking unless you park on the street. I think they may have those battery carts for rent there...you know the ones that you ride in. Yes, there are some hills, but there are a bunch of areas without hills. You can also ride the zoo railroad roundtrip so you don%26#39;t have to walk. It is nice. You just buy a roundtrip ticket and get off at each stop and look around and then get back on and go to the next place. If you have anymore questions just ask or send me a message.

Thank you all for your helpful input.

    Festiva/Outfield Marketing

Just had our visit from the Festiva rep, Steve Lamantia. He sure was full of information!

After he went through his sales speil he was totally blown out of the water when we declined his offer. It was so very well explained to us that he wondered how sane, intelligent people could not tear open their wallet and get the money.

He said........it would only cost us $3,400 for the two timeshare that we already own (paid in full) to be able to get into Festive.

He said........50% of RCI %26amp; II haven already converted their units to points and pretty soon that number will go to 70% and we will never be able to trade.

He said........it will be impossible to sell our units because nobody wants them.

He said..........that they are giving away timeshares for free on eBay.

    We said..........please leave.

We are happy with what we have.

    Crabby,

What Steve told you was so true. Points can exchange for weeks, but weeks can%26#39;t exchange for points. But then if your happy with going to the same place over and over again, that%26#39;s your choice. Most people by a time share to do just that, ';Share';. Oh, by the way, in some states if you don%26#39;t pay your association fee%26#39;s, even as they continue to to up, it%26#39;s a criminal offense.

  • BB's Jazz Blues and Soup

I will be in St. Louis to take my 15 year old son to a ball game, and was wondering if BB%26#39;s has any age restrictions. We have gone to House Of Blues before, and thought BB%26#39;s might be an option. I couldn%26#39;t find anything on the website.

    BB's Jazz Blues and Soup

No age restrictions, at least during the day and normal dinner hours.

In MO, only bars w/ little or no food service are 21+ only. By policy, some may be 21+ only after a certain time in the late evening.

My children, now 19 and going on 15, have been in many times.

    Enjoy.

This weekend Staying with my teenage daughter

We are coming for a three day volleyball tournament- staying at the Crowne Plaza (hoping the renevations have at least been done to the rooms!) I would love suggestions for non-chain restaurants for breakfast lunch and dinner? Also, I read about a first friay art walk- is that near where we are staying? Any good antique , boutique or eclectic shops nearby? We have alot of down time and we have never been to the city before! Thanks for your suggestions.

This weekend Staying with my teenage daughter

The majority of the Crossroads Art District is 8-10 blocks south of the Crowne Plaza, albeit spreadout.

There is FREE trolley service featured in the Arts District with many trolley stops near the galleries. (You might check with your hotel to see if they offer transportation to the Crossroads Art District on First Fridays. Many do.) Once you are there you can take the trolley around to the galleries and restaurants.

When you are done, if you are not driving a car, you can easily catch a cab to your hotel in front of the Westin Hotel across from Union Station. (A lot of the Art District is behind Union Station.) You can enter Union Station using the walkbridge in the parking lot for Lidia%26#39;s and then take The Link (enclosed walkbridge) to the Westin.

As for eclectic shops, there are a few in Crown Center, which is attached to the Westin Hotel.

The new Power and Light District near your hotel offers quite a variety of eating establishments.

Another area you might want to visit is The Plaza. There are many unique shops there. Window shopping at its best.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Enjoy your visit.

This weekend Staying with my teenage daughter

For Breakfast on Saturday am I love Cascones in river Marker. Not far from your hotel. Also for lunch can sit out side of winslow%26#39;s BBQ and people watch. Bo Lings is good for dinner

Power and light is good for eating/drinking but no shopping. Most places are chains. If you need to grab a quick bite- Hit Cosstinos; grocery store. They have EVERYTHING in there

Plaza has nice shops and places to eat. Classic cup is good for any meal of the day. Many chains there too

right off the plaza is Winsteads- a Kansas city tradition for burgers- also serve breakfast

T Q is located in Westport that is walking distance to many bars. Kelly%26#39;s is a landmark- hole in the way- brew pub, sports bars. live music a little bit of everything same as for food. a few shops, You may want to hit the Plaza for shopping- just a short cab ride away

    Q Hotel - area?

Would you suggest staying in the Q area, or more near the Plaza area? We have no plans as of yet, but we enjoy walking around during the day and enjoy going places that has activity and things to see and do during the day as well as night. Thanks again!

The Plaza and Westport are very close. You can walk between them during the day but not at night. Plaza has nicer name brand stores- some local and chain restraurants

    cabs are readily available

Westport is know more of a party place but has a top of the top 5 rated restrauranrs inthe country - few shops- all local

westport would have beter chance for live music

    That was good. I got a good laugh out of it. My favorite line was: ';where my dad and I ate hot, death-free waffles. You know, just the way waffles are supposed to be made.';

Death Free Waffles. Sounds like a great name for a rock band.

    Thanks for posting! :)

What a great start to a fab writing career! The only thing missing was the boy riding the Big Wheel cruising the hallways and REDRUM on the mirrors.

Ha! Maybe it was a creative writing assignment. At any rate, it sounds like it may have been her first time staying in a hotel room by herself.

    Hermann/Ocktoberfest: FUN

My husband and I went to Hermann with another couple the first week in Oct 2008 and had a great time. It helped that the weather was great. On Friday we toured the Stonehill Winery and ate at the Vintage Restaurant that was very good. Sat. we rented bikes in town and rode some on the Katy trail. After that we went and had a picnic lunch at Hermanhof Winery. It was crowded but the atmosphere was fun. Then we went to Oakglen Winery and had a ball. The band was great and we met a lot of friendly people. We spent the rest of the afternoon there. The evenings were not too exciting but we were tired from the day. We did not expect a lot from the trip but ended up having a great time.

    Hermann/Ocktoberfest: FUN

As a Hermann property owner I am glad to here you had a good time. Oktoberfest has be cut back over the past few years because people got out of hand and some people are disapointed. We live in St. Louis and love Hermann so much that we bought a small house for weekends get-a-ways and rent it out when we aren%26#39;t using it.

    WARNING! SHAMELESS PLUG COMING ......http://apfelbaumcottage.com.

    Hermann/Ocktoberfest: FUN

We were in Hermann last weekend. We loved it. We came home with 12 bottles of wine.

What were your favorite experiences at Herman. Any bad ones or tips you want to pass on?

    Thank you,

    bay66

We stayed at the cottages at Hermann Hill. Very, very nice. They are on a bluff over looking the river. Our unit had private hot tub outside, a steam shower, a 2 person jacuzzi tub, kitchen, bedroom, and a see thru fireplace. The kitchen was stocked up with home made breakfast items and cookies.

Our favorite Winery was Adam Puchta. It was small, but the people giving the wine tasting made the difference and we a lot of fun. We also went to Stone Hill and Hermanhoff and we enjoyed both. We ate dinner at Stone Hill and it was a nice dinner.

We visited a little cafe called ';time for pie'; that we enjoyed.

Thank you. I will be sure to include your information in my article. Is do you have a website

you would like me to include in my article?

Sure- here are some links to the places we visited:

    http://www.hermannhill.com/

    http://www.adampuchtawine.com/

    http://www.time4pie.com/

    http://www.stonehillwinery.com/

Let me know if you need anything else. I%26#39;ll do a review of them on TA sometime soon.

You have no idea how much you have helped me. Thank you a million times! I spoke to the Herman Hill Cottages you mentioned and will be posting an article about them on my examiner.com site. I had also thought about doing a series of articles about the wineries and breweries along the Katy Trail partly because I know of several people who are avid bikers in St. Louis. And one with his girlfriend visit the local places along the way. So your links are great. If youever need any help let me know.

    Many Thanks,

    bay66

    HI Apfelbaum,

Thank you for your help in my article for examiner.com. I posted an article about your

cottages yesterday. I wish you all the best!!

    Best wishes,

    bay66

    Hi LindaofKC,

Where were you able to rent bikes from? And did you do a circular route or did you have someone pick you up when you were done? How would you compare the two wineries you went to? And were there any B/B that were near to the trail. I have heard the Vintage Restaurant was very good. Did you purchase your picnic items on the grounds or did you bring them with you?

Thank you for your help and have a great day!

    bay66

Thanks Bay66! That was a wonderful article you did for us. I just hope that kind words of Hermann like this help people fall in love with it like my wife and I have.

Regarding the Katy Trail, that is an article you should write. You could spend a week or so biking it and writing about it. You will find many wonderful communities, quaint shops, and great wineries along the way. I rode the trail once three years ago with my 70yr old father and am planning another trip this june with my wife and 10yr old daughter. We will take 8 days and ride 30-40 miles a day with a rest day in Hermann, of course.

Regarding Restaurants in Hermann I have two recomendations.

    1. Rivers Edge - It is actually located in Fredricksburg, about 10 miles away, but it is a real experience. It sits on the banks of the Gasconade River and you have to take a ferry to cross the river.

    2. Cottage Restaurant and Gallery - This is a wonderful dining experience that uses fresh and local ingredients, giving the diner a truely fantastic meal. It is a bit pricey, but your on vacaton right?

Ideas for an overnight stop in Missouri?

Our family will be traveling through Missouri this summer on a trip to Arizona. We%26#39;re looking at stopping for an overnight stay and are researching possible cities for that. Is Joplin, or somewehe in that vicinity, decent. Thank you very much for any input!

Ideas for an overnight stop in Missouri?

The Joplin area is decent, and there are a lot of hotels and motels to choose from and most of them are within a couple of miles of the interstate. I would not hesitate at all to spend the night in Joplin.

Best Transportation to Downtown from the Airport?

What%26#39;s the best way to get to the Westin near Busch Stadium from the airport. We will have suitcases, so I am guessing it would be wise to take a taxi.

    Anybody know the approximate cost?

    Thanks,

    vaca99

Best Transportation to Downtown from the Airport?

I don%26#39;t know the cab fare from the airport to the Westin, but the Metro light rail system will take you directly from the Airport to the Busch Stadium stop immediately adjacent to the Westin for $3.75 per person (#1.85 seniors %26amp; adults).

    http://www.metrostlouis.org/

Best Transportation to Downtown from the Airport?

That should be $1.85 seniors %26amp; children in the post above.

Thanks! No problems wheeling a piece of luggage on the light rail line???

    Vaca99

As long as you are not coming in right before a Cardinals game, there should be plenty of room for luggage.

Okay, I am assuming exact change. Do you buy your tickets BEFORE getting on or AS you board?

Can you tell I like to know what to expect? :-)

I so appreciate all the great feedback.

Final Four Games AND the Cards%26#39; home opener, here we come!!!!

    --vaca99

I wouldn%26#39;t hesitate to take Metrolink for the difference in price between that and a taxi. They have ramps at the Busch Stadium station, so as long as your luggage has wheels, there should be no problem. Tickets are purchased prior to getting on train. I don%26#39;t believe exact change is required, but I am not 100% sure. Maybe someone else knows. Enjoy your stay!!!

I don%26#39;t believe exact change is required. There are automated machines at the stations that you get your tickets from.

    Shows?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has seen the Bob Nelson Comedy show.?? We are meeting some friends in Branson and she loves comedy.

Also has anyone seen the Country Tonight show?? We are thinking of seeing it when Collin Raye is a guest star.

    We are coming April 14th-24th.

    Thanks again

Where to eat around Forest Park area....

We are going to the Zoo on Monday and wanting to know what are some good places to eat that are kid friendly. I have a 8 and a 10 yr old.

Where to eat around Forest Park area....

What to do around Union Station

I%26#39;m hoping to get a hotel room near Union Station and I need advice on what to do that is around Union Station. Thinking of taking metro to the Arch. Problem is that we are bringing our youngest with us: 12 yr girl that loves to see the sites and a 15 yr boy that is ';bored'; with seeing the sites everywhere we go. He%26#39;s into music (alternative rock) and likes to play sports but not watch. In order to not make this trip excrutiating for us (or him) what can we do on our short trip (3 days)? Museums are out-we%26#39;ve been to alot and we visited museums here in St. Louis when he was 6. Thanks so much for your help!

What to do around Union Station

Forgot to say our trip is scheduled for Mar 25-28. We were trying to visit somewhere close enough to drive since my husband is scheduled for eye surgery March 30 and do not want to take a chance on air travel delays. We live in southeastern Iowa and St. Louis is about 4 hours away.

    Anyway....thanks!

What to do around Union Station

Well...for your son there is an upper limits rock climbing gym right by Union Station. I haven%26#39;t been to that one, but rock climbing gyms in general are fun for athletic-minded people.

Not around Union Station....but what about Dave and Busters in Earth City? That can be fun for the whole family, particularly the 15 year old, though.

I know you mentioned not going to museums but what about the City Museum? It is not a museum in the traditional sense. Check out the link. It is a cab ride from Union Station. Go at night to make it more exciting for the kids. It can get pretty lively.

    http://www.citymuseum.org/home.asp

    http://www.citymuseum.org/3D.html

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbz2F7R29i8

As you mentioned- The Arch is great.

    I second the City Museum.

I couldn%26#39;t be LESS of a City Museum fan, but I know others dig it.......

When my nieces and nephews visit I cave in and take them to Six Flags. It is about 30 minutes west of St. Louis. That is their favorite. Another activity they like is going rollerblading around Creve Coeur Lake.

A while back I took my niece to The Focal Point (www.thefocalpoint.org) . It is about 15-20 minutes from St. Louis. It is a non-smoking venue for watching folk/Indie bands. When we were there we saw the Scottish band %26#39;Old Blind Dogs%26#39;. We had a great time. Plus there are numerous restaurants nearby. For an awsome indy radio station for your son tune into 89.1. It is run by students at Lindenwood University and by far the best radio station out here although the weekend format can get funky.

The Zoo and Science are sure to please just about everybody. I have not been to The City Museum so I have no opinion there.

I think you and your kids would have a great time at the City Museum. A AB brewery tour is always a big hit for visitors also.

    ';I couldn%26#39;t be LESS of a City Museum fan, but I know others dig it.......%26#39;

That may be, but it%26#39;s a pretty good suggestion for a 12 year old and 15 year old... particularly since one is on the athletic side. It%26#39;s really pretty close in concept to a climbing gym. You climb around in both places. The difference is that one is on walls with a more structured environment and the other is on well, pretty much everything.

Also, you might want to look into which shows are at the Pageant in the Loop when you are in town. There are quite a few alternative groups that come through there, and not all of the shows (if any) require you to be 21 to enter. Depending on when you are in town, you could also see who is playing at the Verizon ampitheater. It is a little ways from Union Station though (about 30-45 minutes).

We are just going to have to agree to disagree on the City Museum thing...I don%26#39;t liken it to a climbing gym at all. I don%26#39;t think it is great for anyone besides small children, really...I just didn%26#39;t dig it.

That isn%26#39;t to say that hoards of people don%26#39;t LOVE it because I know they do...just not something I recommend to anyone.

I was very disappointed when we went....maybe because everyone bragged on it so much?? I enjoyed the big slides but that was the extent of it...I, personally, found it to be....dark...weird....dirty looking....but lots of small children were having a blast! Great for them...just not somewhere I will ever go again.

We just returned from two nights in St.Louis with two 14 year old boys. We saw Cirque Dreams at the Fox Theater (what I wanted to do) on Sunday afternoon--I wasn%26#39;t sure the boys and my husband would be thrilled with the performance, but they willingly went and really enjoyed it. The theater in itself is awesome--check the website--www.fabulousfox.com. The show is full of contortionist/gymnast acts. Your 12 year old will love it and your 15 year old will probably even like it. We stayed at the Drury Inn at Union Station, and I would highly recommend it. Free hot breakfast--not just muffins and bagels--from 6:30 to 9:30. Free cocktails, pop, and snacks from 5:30 to 7pm. All in a beautifully restored historical building with free parking and 2 minute walk to the metro. Union Station is a beautiful building. Be sure to check out the whispering arch. Shopping there is dismal at best, but the building is beautiful. Take a 20 minute drive to the Galleria for shopping--well worth the effort.

    The Wilderness Campground RV rental

Thinking about renting an RV at The Wilderness campground by Silver Dollar City in July. Any reviews? How is the campground? Condition of RV%26#39;s? Picnic table by each campsite? Would appreciate any info on this campground!

    The Wilderness Campground RV rental

Sorry, I can not give you any help. But go to 1branson.com, there seems to be more trafic there now days, and they may be able to help you out.

    Have a great trip!

    The Wilderness Campground RV rental

I can%26#39;t give you a review of the RV but I did stay in a tent camper two or three years ago. The campground is very clean but you%26#39;re packed in there like sardines. I could barely park the tent and the truck in the spot. My sister would jump out and have me pull as close to the tent camper and pole as possible so I wouldn%26#39;t be sticking out in the road. The pool is nice and the bathrooms are very clean. The store is also well stocked and the shuttle to SDC is convenient. (The shuttle from SDC was not so nice. It%26#39;s a free for all when it finally arrives.) The picnic tables were nothing special. And the campfire pit was so close to the neighboring site that we couldn%26#39;t sit all the way around it and at one point poured some water on it because we felt it was just to close to their tent camper.

    springfield

We are going to Springfield just for a quick overnight getaway!!

We will go to Bass Pro, but we are thinking about staying at the Sleep Inn, anyone ever stayed there? The reviews were good.

We also are wanting to go to the Springfield Cardinals game, and don%26#39;t know what tickets are the best, I know the REDBIRD ROOST includes food, but not sure of what kind of food and we are taking our 2 kids and 4 tickets are 132.00, just dont know if it%26#39;s worth the money!!

If anyone has any input please let us know!

    thanks

    springfield

It would be helpful to know when you%26#39;re planning on doing this, but here goes...

I can%26#39;t tell you about the motel, but for the game, the Redbird Roost food is nachos, popcorn, drinks, hotdogs and brats--plenty of it too. Also it sounds like there are just 4 of you which would be about a hundred bucks---Roost tickets are $23.50. Myself, I%26#39;d just go on a Friday if possible(great fireworks after the game)get a box seat(they usually aren%26#39;t sold out) and pick and choose my food. You wouldn%26#39;t need to reserve in advance unless you were going for the Roost. You could also avoid a rainout that way.

    springfield

We are going April 9 and 10th!!

    Thanks so much

Great, the season opens Thursday the 9th, there are fireworks for both the Thursday and Friday games! If the weather is good those opening week games could be sellouts though---so I might have to eat crow about not getting your tickets ahead of time.

    Best place to stay to be ';in the heart of it all';

My husband and I want to spend a long weekend in Kansas City. I guess I%26#39;m wondering if we want to be ';in the heart of it all'; and within easy access, is the Country Club Plaza the best area for us to stay in? Is there another area that anyone would recommend. We%26#39;d like to stay as close to $100 as possible for a room.

    Best place to stay to be ';in the heart of it all';

Depends on what you want to do. In addition to the Plaze, downtown by Crown Center and Union Station would be a good choice or maybe even by the Power and Light District.

    Best place to stay to be ';in the heart of it all';

Is there one hotel that stands above the rest? Thanks for your help!

First timers - Lake of the Ozarks looking for place to stay!

There are so many places to stay.... can anyone recommend someplace nice that is family oriented. We have two kids, 7 and 9. Cleanliness and a nice pool are high on my list of priorities. I prefer something a little nicer - a rustic cabin type place would probably not be the place for me. I appreciate any tips as we have never traveled to this area before!

    Kim

First timers - Lake of the Ozarks looking for place to stay!

    Kim,

It might help to know how you want to spend your time in the area. Do you want to stay on the lake?

Will you have/rent a boat? The area is really spread out and because of the size of the lake it can take quite a while to drive to the various attractions depending on where you stay.

We spent many summer vacations at the Lake. We%26#39;re planning to go again this summer. If you want to PM me, please feel free.

    William Shakespeare Gastropub St. Louis

Located right next door to the Fox theatre. My wife and I went there for dinner last night (April 2, 2009) before the Fox Theatre. Got there 6:45pm. Waiter took a long time to come to the table. Once we placed our order, every other table after us that was seated got bread and drinks promptly. I had to ask for bread from our waiter. I order the fish and chips, my wife the Bistro Steak. Fish and chips were better off ordering from Long Johns Silver. Bland and flavorless. The french fries were warm and soggy (that%26#39;s from oil not hot enough to fry the potatoes. My wife%26#39;s steak was literally put on a frying pan and browned on both sides, no other spices or flavor added. Very bland and rather tough piece of sirloin. I would not go back to there to eat. Service is so so, food is mediocre at best. Save your money, go somewhere else.

    William Shakespeare Gastropub St. Louis

Interesting review. We ate there on the Saturday before last. The circumstances were different. We went after a concert at the Sheldon, about 10:30, so there were only a few tables filled, and no wait for service. Overall, an excellent experience. We had some mushroom flatbread a an appetizer which was delicious. My wife had some type of a vegetarian curry. It was good, but not great. There was nothing wrong with the way it was cooked, basic ingredients, or texture, so it could have been our personal taste. Maybe we are used to more spices as we eat at Indian restaurants frequently. I had the fish and chips and I thought they were some of the best I%26#39;ve had. Now, I don%26#39;t eat fish and chips alot so I can%26#39;t call myself an expert but I indulge occasionally. These were presented in a ';fake newspaper'; cone placed in a metal ringed holder. I commented to my wife that they were very well cooked, moist inside, and the batter was slightly spicy with an excellent texture.

Maybe when you went the service and kitchen were stressed as they were crowded and it was right before showtime. If so, they need to get it corrected as that is when many will want to go there and that%26#39;s when they need to get it right.

    William Shakespeare Gastropub St. Louis

I was very hopeful about this restaurant opening up. But, I have heard so many bad reviews that I am really hesitant to give it a try.

only place we could find to stay is the days inn @ 3654 s. lindbergh blvd. located at watson %26amp; lindbergh. wondering if someone can give me some info on the metro system. is there a station near the hotel? i figure there isn%26#39;t going to be a problem finding one downtown close to the scottrade center but not sure where we%26#39;ll be able to catch one coming TO downtown. any thoughts on the area of town we%26#39;re staying in and whether or not we are going to be wanting to take the subway back after the 8:30 games.

any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    wait %26amp; see

There is not a metro station near your hotel. If you want to avoid driving downtown, your best bet is probably to drive to the Shrewsbury metro station and ride in from there. You can park on the lot at the station for free. However, metrolink just cut down their hours of operation, so I%26#39;m not sure if they will be running after the 8:30 games get out or not. If they are running, it is perfectly safe.

    wait %26amp; see

    thanks for the speedy reply!

From their updated schedule it looks like the trains will still run until a little after midnight, just not as frequently (i.e. 20 minutes between trains on the weekends vs 15 before, I think).

Happy to help! I hope you enjoy the games this weekend!

what is there to do in weston?

except go eat bbq in kcmo? surely there must be more. please advise, and thanks!

what is there to do in weston?

There is a winery you could visit. If you are going in the winter, you could ski at snow creek area.

what is there to do in weston?

    Antiques and a winery.

And go to nearby Leavenworth with the Fort (museum and driving tour), Buffalo, Carousel Museum, 2 national cemeteries wonderful old buildings and a surprising number of good, non-chain restaurants.

There is nothing to do in Weston but drive right on through. It is a very small, boring and narrow minded place.

The shopping and restaurants are almost never open and when they are, the restaurants all all smoking restaurants and the shops sell over priced junk.

There is a state park just outside of Weston... Weston Bend State Park.

    How Far Away is Airport?

My husband and I are coming to Kansas City for the Royals Opening Weekend, April 10-12. We found a great deal for the Hyatt Place around the airport. How far is this actually from town? We don%26#39;t mind driving a little ways, we just want to make sure it%26#39;s not in the middle of nowhere.

    THanks :)

    How Far Away is Airport?

KC has a decent case of urban sprawl. The city itself has grown and reaches the airport area. Nearby is the up-and-coming shopping/residential district called Zona Rosa. It has many shops and restaurants, and would be handy for someone staying near the airport. There are few amenities around the airport hotels, but each usually has its own restaurant and gift shop.

As for the Stadium, if you stay at the airport hotel you will be approx. 28 miles (35 minutes) from the stadium. It is an easy all interstate highway drive.

    How Far Away is Airport?

Well, you won%26#39;t be in the middle of nowhere; that%26#39;s a couple exits north of the airport. If you scored a great deal at the hotel, and you don%26#39;t mind driving a couple dozen miles to get to the stadium (and other attractions), you%26#39;ll be fine.

We%26#39;ll all keep our fingers crossed for pleasant weather that weekend. Enjoy your visit!

    Zoo safari pass coupons

Does anyone know where I can get the Buy 1 Get 1 Free Safari pass coupons? I found them in a Drury flyer last year but can%26#39;t get my hands on them yet this year. Thanx so much.

    Zoo safari pass coupons

They usually come out in the spring if I am not mistaken in the newspaper. I have not seen them yet this year. I am looking for them as well!

    Zoo safari pass coupons

I have gotten them out of the paper in the spring for the past 3 years. I was trying to search the internet and got on Drury%26#39;s site https:/鈥acationsavings.aspx

They had a lot of the ooupons for St. Louis that they have had the last 2 years but didn%26#39;t see a Zoo Safari Pass. I hope that they make them available this year. Big money saver when you have kids!!
