We are planning to spend 3 days in St Louis next week and have a room at the Union Staion Marriott. In my research for the trip I came across a few scary posts. It will be myself and my sister-n-law (both late 20s) and my daughters 3 and 5. We are planning to visit city museum, the zoo, maybe AB tour, the arch, botanical gardens, possibly the loop, I was planning to take metrolink when possible to avoid driving in a city I%26#39;m unfamiliar with.
Should I be concerend about any of the areas we plan to go. Is downtown area near union station safe? If it was me and my nusband I would not be so worried but since it concerns my kids I am wondering if I need to be worried.
Please help put my mind to rest or let me know if I need to look into changing hotels or activities.
should I be worried about saftey?
I would not worry about any of the places that you mentioned.
Only the Arch and the Loop are easily accessible by Metrolink though. There is a metrolink station at Forest Park (the Zoo) but it is a long walk to the Zoo from the station. Take a cab to the City Museum, the Zoo and to the Botanical Gardens. Part of a major interstate (64/40) is closed for a few miles in St. Louis so it could make driving in an unfamiliar city even more confusing. The AB tour may be boring for the kids but the adults will enjoy it.
You will be fine at the Marriott. Unless there is a Blues game, there wont be too many people downtown at night near Union Station except those shopping, dining, or staying at the hotels. I assume with young children you don%26#39;t plan on walking around the city late into the night. I have visited the Zoo, City Museum, Arch, and Botanical Gardens with my 5 and 3 yr olds plenty of times and never felt threatened or afraid. I can understand your feelings but I think you will be just fine and will love all the places you visit. :)
Now, that being said- there are weirdos in every city. But, the areas you mentioned and the areas you travel through to get to them are fine.
Have a good time. :)

Thanks for your response. You are correct we wont be walking around at 11:00 at night and I figured the places we are planning to see are places that would be fairly safe. But I tend to be a bit of a worrier. Thanks for helping put my mind at ease.
You are welcome!
Be sure to seek out the whispering arch in Union Station. You will find it at the hotel entrance off Market St. Stand at one end and face the wall with one of your daughters and have your sister in law walk to the other side of the lobby and stand and face the wall on the other end with your other daughter. You can whisper and hear each other like you were standing next to each other.
Have fun
