Will be coming in from Mt Vernon on I-64 and heading to kansas city area. Is there still construction on I-64 thru town.
I was thinking of getting on I255 on the east side of St. L and going up to 270 to 370 to I-70 West...
Is the this best way to go....Will probably leave Mt Vernon around 7am and imagine it is about a 90 minute drive from there..
thx
Friday morning traffic`
Yes, the portion of I-64 in the city proper is still closed. I-270 is really crowded in the morning. Once you take I-255 to I-270, you may want to just get on I-64 (head towards Wentzville) which is still open, and take it all the way to I-70. That will minimize your time on 270.
Friday morning traffic`
Going 270 to 370 to I-70 west could still have very heavy traffic crossing the Mississippi River via 270. Depending on the traffic conditions, you might be better off going thru downtown directly to I-70 west. If it was me, I would tune in to either 1120 AM KMOX or 550 AM KTRS, as you get close to St. Louis and monitor traffic conditions. They both have regular traffic reports every 10 minutes or so. I would go with your original plan (270 to 370 to 70) unless you hear about heavy congestion that way. Then I would consider going thru downtown to I-70 west, as an alternate route.
thanks so much....about what times in the morning are your rush hour? I think last time we did take I-70 through town, but it was a Sunday morning and pretty quiet.....
Thanks....maybe we will get out of Mt Vernon earlier...
My experience, on the east to west flow, is the worst traffic is earlier, say from 6:30 to 8:00, and by 8:30 it is lightening up and smooth sailing by 9am. So, I wouldn%26#39;t leave any earler. Rain, an accident, or bridge / highway construction can cause delays any time.
On your first question, I drive into St. Louis very often, and barring a major accident on the Popler Street bridge (I64/70/55), just taking I70 through town is always quicker. You go way out of your way via I255 to I270 and some of the worst traffic is on the stretch crossing the I270 bridge to where you meet up with I70.
Most of the time I, after the merge (when 64, 66, and 70 come together) I get in the left lane and take the Martin Luther King bridge. There is usually a back up right as you get into Missouri, but it moves quickly. Just get into the left lane coming off the bridge and it flows directly to the up ramp back onto I70.
thanks for the suggestions.....I really doubt we will try and leave any before 7am....no need to get into the thick of the rush hour....i had enough of the heavy traffic this morning in Atlanta...lol....
I agree- take I70 thru downtown
